Oppressive Rulers
Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahmatullah alayh) said: “When an oppressive ruler is appointed over you, then recite Istighfaar (seek forgiveness) in abundance for yourselves and for the ruler. In this way reform the situation.”
According to the Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), tyrannical rulers are the reflection of the deeds of the people. The way of remedying the situation according to the Hadith is for the people to reform themselves morally and to progress spiritually. Then Allah Ta’ala will change the condition of the rulers or replace them with benign rulers.
Hadhrat Ibn Sammaak (rahmatullah alayh) said: “When you commit evil deeds, you soothe yourself by saying that Allah Ta’ala has decreed this for you (in your Taqdeer). So, when oppressive rulers are appointed over you, then justify their reign over you in a similar way. Say that Allah Ta’ala has decreed (in your Taqdeer) this trial for you. Your misdeeds are the cause of oppression.”
