Yvonne Ridley, the sister who had embraced Islam while being held captive by the Taliban, had written an article denouncing the evil music and singing of one ‘Muslim’ pop-singer who had organized haraam music/singing sessions at which Muslim females exhibited themselves in the worst displays of jaahiliyyah, jumping in the aisles of the hall like apes and prostitutes.

The popsinger, in response to her criticism wrote: “Be it informed that the subject of music is one of the most controversial topics in Islamic Jurisprudence……….However, I respect and follow the opinion of other eminent scholars—classical and contemporary, who permit singing and the use of musical instruments.”

The popsinger is the last person on earth who should be mentioning anything about Islamic Jurisprudence

We propose to deal with only this extract from the popsinger’s article. The article is a futile attempt to justify music and singing on the basis of stupid personal opinion. Even pork, wine, fornication and every other act of immorality could be justified on the basis of the kind of argument tendered by the popsinger.

Music is unanimously haraam in Islam. There is no difference of opinion among the classical Fuqaha on this prohibition. As for contemporary ‘scholars’ who claim that music is permissible, it will suffice to say that such ‘scholars’ are the followers of Iblees. They are juhala who masquerade as scholars. They have no standing in the Shariah.

We have discussed the subject of music, singing and musical instruments in detail in our book, Sautush Shaitaan (The Voice of Shaitaan). The book is available from Mujlisul Ulama of S.A., P.O. Box 3393, Port Elizabeth, 6056, South Africa. The local postage cost is R4.35. The postage cost for foreign countries is about $2 (two dollars). South Africans may send stamps. Stamps of other countries are not valid in South Africa. Anyone who cannot afford even the postage, may still write for the book.

The book will, Insha’Allah, convince all seekers of the truth that music is totally and unanimously haraam. The views and claims of non-entities and juhala are of no significance.
