Hadhrat Ibraaheem Bin Uqbah (rahmatullah alayh) said: “The man who will regret most on the Day of Qiyaamah will be an Aalim who had aspired for a high position with his knowledge.”
The Knowledge of the Aalim is for safeguarding the Shariah and for Amr Bil Ma’roof Nahy Anil Munkar (Commanding righteousness and prohibiting evil). The purpose of Knowledge is not the acquisition of worldly fame, rank and monetary gain. These evils are the salient features and motives of the learned men, the so-called scholars, of this age.
Hadhrat Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) said: “I fear most for this Ummah a man who is an Aalim with his tongue, but a jaahil at heart.” This is a commentary on the condition of the ulama of this era.
It is not the function of the Ulama to certify the business ventures of non-Muslims. It is not their function to issue halaal certificates to boost the local and export trade of non-Muslim enterprises, nor is it the function of the Ulama to issue halaal certificates to certify the Riba banks.
GUIDANCE
The Ulama have to issue fataawa for the guidance of the Ummah, not for the sake of the money which the banks and financial institutions pay. The function which the hired ’scholars’ have assumed for themselves is the despicable trade of ‘fatwas’. Banks and meat-suppliers pay fees— licence fees and halaal certificate fees for the obtainal of ‘jawaaz’ (permissibility) verdicts, not for, decrees of adm-e-jawaaz (impermissibility).
To comply with this unwritten condition of their work contracts, the hired scholars are dutibound to ‘research’ the Kutub of the Shariah to extract by hook or by crook grounds for the legalization of the financial commodities and products of the finance houses of capitalism. They have truly struck an evil bargain.
